Hello! I have been doing daily gesture practice for a couple weeks, and I'd love some feedback. I do feel as if I struggle to get loose/dynamic poses with good energy. Any critique is greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

Hello, first of all, these are great! i can really tell u are getting better and honestly for 1 minute studies these are great.

What i see you can improve for having more loose & dynamic poses:

You might need to exaggerate the lines more; make them more curved and long. exaggerate the poses, take it a little bit more further of what you see in the image. It`s all about intent.

A very good resource that has worked really well for me is Michael Hamptons "figure drawing design and invention" book, he has a brief breakdown of gestures in the beggining of his book and much more content about anatomy and how to simplify it.

I see you putting much effort in the exact form of the body, but i dont think that is needed to convey dynamic poses of 1 min sketch, what do i mean by this is if you just simplify it even more, use less lines, make them more curvy and long, it will look much better and not only it will be more efficient; in the long run, when you figure out how to simplify it even more, it will make it more dynamic and powerful. Of course this is only refering to very short studies, when u have more time you can and should build up the body more.

I totally see u are trying to do that in these too, its just a matter of exaggerating the lines more. Hope this helps in any way or form! Keep it up

Thank you! I will look into that book you mentioned, and I'll try keep exaggeration and simple lines in mind when I'm doing my practice. I feel as if I tend to get a bit sloppy when it comes to doing the limbs, as I try to get the whole form of the anatomy, and it can come out looking very messy when it's done so quick. I'll keep at it! Thanks again!

Wow, you have a great eye for proportion :D

From the poses you've shared, I see rougher and shorter lines in places where you seem a little more unsure of or gauging where to place a body part. It's not a bad thing at all, but it might be why you're not feeling a good energy/a strong dynamic feel.

It might be fun to play with the weights of your focus a bit? Lean a heavier eye into the parts of the body that are more front and center, or the most characteristic; Pay less details for the parts that are obscured or not contributing much to the overall pose. I think this will add some more energy to your work!

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the feedback. I definitely get a bit flustered sometimes when it comes to placing the limbs, and it comes out looking sketchy rather than the flowy energy that I'd like to capture. I'll try to put more focus onto the flow of the limbs that are more emphasized in the pose, and I'd also like to work on learning how to quickly simplify the body in a more efficient way for my gestures (rather than trying to put in all the anatomical info within just a minute). Thanks again for your comment! ❤️
