10 More Heads!

by Slenderali, July 4th 2024 © 2024 Slenderali
Continuing with my 100 head studies, putting me at 20/100. Spent a little bit more time understanding value with this round, so each heads took a bit longer. Mostly happy with the results though!

Hello and Happy 4th of July, Slenderali. How are you and your family and friends?

Nice job on retaining your forces with edges, spaces, proportions and values of your faces. I think you're really getting better almost every time, but I completely feel that these gesture drawings need truly caricatured but expressive drawing as if for your caricatured animation and acting yet. Would you like to kindly do 60 drawings of expressions with 30 seconds for each face and expression?

The reason why is because your facial features can and will become really less stilted but totally more raw with each new iteration and new ideation. So for more info, may I suggest Drawing From The Artist Within by Betty Edwards? Because it's got that one brainstorming chapter. My hat's off to you and your journey.

Very good job. Wishing you a lot of stamina on your project to draw 100 heads. I am just curious, how much time do you take per portrait right now?
Slenderali
Thank you, I appreciate it! Right now it's between 5-10 minutes. I want to get to a point where I can confidently capture likeness in 2-3 minutes instead, much likey gesture in figure drawing.

Wow, I can't wait to find out what you learn from drawing 100 heads! I definitely need to do something similar myself lol :D
Slenderali
You totally should!! It's eye-opening that's for sure hahaha

Looking good!! Your faces are quite dynamic, if I could offer some advice (assuming you're still studying values), I would exaggerate the shadows. Don't worry about rendering or having smooth transitions between values, on the contrary - don't be afraid to use sharper lines, and focus on shapes. Good luck with the rest of your faces!

Thank you, you're so right! It would also be a major time saver. I'll try that next time around!
