Gestures

Done as part of a 30 minute class. My current goal is: I don't know! I am an absolute beginner; I'm here to study the basics of rendering

Gesture is about feeling. The rhythm of the pose. The emotional state of the model. Gesture is everywhere, it underpins all which is form. It's in the trees and the clouds and poetry. Forget about shapes and contours and likeness. Look for the long line that says some about the pose and the posee. Let go. Smooth, unconscious lines if you can, at a nice pace. Don't rush.

Great starting point.

Keep it up, draw from your heart. Xx

Excellent job, Freiguy86. But I've got one small suggestion: Why don't you do another figure gesture in 29 mins and 57 secs in blind contour mode, if you please??

These are a great start, I get an idea of the pose from each one. You've got the beginnings of some good curves here, and some of your curves are opposing too.

You're linework is a bit messy, try and use a single fluid line. Don't worry about the outlines of the body (what people refer to as "contours"), think more about capturing the movement of the body, the pose, the overall gesture someone is making. You won't get a realistic image of the figure but that's not the point of gesture drawing.

To succesfully capture a pose you can think of the body and it's limbs being formed by curves, specifically C curves, S curves, and L curves. Curves that look like those letters. Make your curves assymetrical or opposing.

Take your time to observe the pose of the figure and it's movement, and the simplest way you can describe that with line on the page. Spend more time observing than drawing. By observing you can better understand the movement of the figure, and a better understanding will lead to better drawing.

Stan Prokopenko made a great video on youtube about gesture drawing which really helped me when I was starting out

Hope this helps, keep drawing! :)
